RMC-West Point hockey series re-upped for three years

Posted: January 26th, 2014 @ 1:45pm

Royal Military College and the U.S. Military Academy have renewed their annual hockey series for another three years.

The agreement was confirmed by officials of both schools after the 78th game between the two military academies Saturday night, won this year by West Point 5-2.

The series resumed in 2012 after a five-year hiatus due to philosophical differences. Before its interruption, it had been the oldest continuous international exchange in all of sport, having begun in 1923. It was contested every year through 2006 save for years during the Second World War when RMC was closed.

Army coach Brian Riley toasted the spirit of the game, as the players of both teams gathered together on the ice after Saturday's contest for a group photo.

"That's truly what this game is meant to be," he said.

Members of the Army team wore helmet decals for the game with the initials DM, in tribute to former RMC athletics director and hockey coach Danny McLeod, who died Jan. 14 at the age of 92.

"For me it's really kind of bittersweet to be here and not have Danny McLeod," Riley said. "From my standpoint, talking with him when this series wasn't being played, to listen to him and to listen to my dad (long-time Army coach Jack Riley), we owe it to those guys who have played and coached in this series before to get this thing, as Danny used to say, back on the rails."
