Basketball Gaels split at Ottawa

Queen's Golden Gaels outscored the No. 10-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees 14-3 in overtime Saturday night to claim a 57-46 victory in an Ontario University Athletics women's basketball game in Ottawa.
Jenny Wright scored eight of those 14 points for Queen's, which is now 2-0 in overtime this year.
With the win, the Gaels, 10-6 and winners of three of their last four, climbed to within two points of the second-place Gee-Gees, 11-5, in the East division standings. Queen's stayed four points ahead of fourth-place Toronto, which defeated Laurentian 77-45 Saturday.
The Gaels, who trailed by four points at halftime, led by two going into the fourth quarter. A basket by Ottawa's Angela Tilk with 14 seconds to play sent the game into extra time.
Liz Boag led Queen's with 15 points while Wright finished the game with 14. Robyn Pearson had 10 points and a game-best 14 rebounds, the fifth time in her last eight games she's reached double digits in the latter department.
Tilk scored 13 points for the Gee-Gees while Maddie Stephen scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Sarah Besselink, the Holy Cross Secondary School grad who's starting in her rookie season at Ottawa, had six points in 21 minutes of playing time.
Queen's resumes play Friday, when the Gaels will host the Algoma Thunderbirds.

Queen's men, meanwhile, continue to struggle. They had 100 points dumped on them for the second night in a row, this time by No. 2-ranked Ottawa as the Gee-Gees posted a 100-79 home-court victory.
The Gaels, who allowed an average of 72.8 points per game in their pre-Christmas schedule, have given up 81 or more in six of seven games since the break, an average of 86 per game in that time. In losing six of seven January games, Queen's, 7-9, has tumbled into sixth place in the powerful OUA East, where three of the nation's top five ranked teams reside.
Saturday night in Ottawa, the Gaels climbed to within five points, trailing 41-36 after Milan Mitrovic hit a jump shot with a little more than two minutes left in the second quarter. The Gee-Gees responded with 12 straight points to end the half and they took command with 32 third-quarter points.
Terry Thomas had a remarkable night for Ottawa, with 42 points - 30 of them in the first half - in just 24 minutes of playing time. He was 15-for-19 from the field, 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Mike L'Africain added 21points as the Gee-Gees, 14-2, were successful on 50.7 per cent of their shots from the field. Ottawa surpassed the 100-point plateau for the sixth time this year, the third time in its last five games.
Sukhpreet Singh, with 17 points, and Roshane Roberts, with 16, led Queen's.
The Gaels will host Algoma Friday night at 8 o'clock.
