Queen's women, men sweep basketball doubleheader from Algoma

Posted: February 1st, 2014 @ 12:52am

In a withering defensive performance that limited the visitors to just three touchdowns, the Queen's Golden Gaels whipped the Algoma Thunderbirds 66-21 in an Ontario University Athletics women's basketball game at the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre.

It was both Queen's best defensive display of the year, and Algoma's poorest offensive performance.

In winning for the fourth time in their last five games, the Gaels, 11-6, stayed within two points of second-place Ottawa in the East division standings. The Gee-Gees defeated Ryerson 59-57 Friday night.

Algoma, winless in 17 games in its first year of university competition, shot just 16 per cent from the field and was 1-for-15 from beyond the three-point arc. The Thunderbirds also committed 32 turnovers.

It was 26-7 after the first quarter and the rout was on, as Queen's allowed Algoma to score just two points in the second quarter, on a pair of free throws separated by 15 straight Queen's points.

Robyn Pearson led Queen's with 14 points, as every member of the team played at least 12 minutes. Emily Hazlett, Abby Dixon and Liz Boag scored nine points apiece for the Gaels, who Saturday night will host the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Though they once again had trouble keeping the other team away from the basket, the Queen's men Friday night scored often enough to gain a 90-85 win over Algoma.

Trailing by a point after the first quarter, Queen's led 48-37 at halftime.

The Gaels led by as much as 19 points, 60-41, with just more than five minutes to play in the third quarter, and by 16 points, 75-59, with 8 minutes left in the game but in the final four minutes the Thunderbirds, who scored 29 points in the fourth quarter, went on a 10-2 run to trail just 86-80 with 74 seconds remaining to be played.

The Gaels rode out the storm, however, as Nikola Misljencevic hit six straight free throws down the stretch.

Victory came despite the Gaels surrendering more than 80 points for the seventh time in eight post-Christmas games. It also avenged an 83-76 loss to Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie two weeks ago.

With the win, one that ended a four-game losing streak, the Gaels improved to 8-9 going into a game tonight at 8 o'clock with Laurentian. The Voyageurs, 10-7, lost their third in a row Friday night, 96-86 at York.

Playing without leading scorer Greg Faulkner, whose injured shoulder may require surgery, the Gaels got 19 points from Sukhpreet Singh and 19 more off the bench from Patrick Street.

For the sophomore Street, who was 4-for-8 from three-point range, it was a season-best performance, and the second time in three games he's reached double digits.

Misljencevic finished with 16 points, Mackenzie Simpson had 14 points and a game-high - and season-best - 16 rebounds and Roshane Roberts scored 13 points for Queen's.

Jimmy Bilenga, with 19 points, and Reynaldo Carnakle, with 18, led Algoma, which slipped to 4-13 in its maiden season in the OUA.
