Queen's women bow to No. 3-ranked Guelph
 Posted: February 1st, 2014 @ 6:57pm
A pair of goals less than two minutes apart early in the third period propelled the Guelph
Gryphons to a 3-2 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels in an Ontario University Athletics women's hockey game Saturday afternoon in Guelph.
The win for No. 3-ranked Guelph, 19-3, allowed the first-place Gryphons to move four points ahead of the No. 5-ranked Gaels, 15-3-4, who stand third, one point behind second-place Laurier, pending the result of the Golden Hawks' game Saturday night versus Laurentian.
Guelph has not lost since Nov. 16 - 10 games ago - and Saturday was the first time they'd given more than one goal in a game since Nov. 23.
The Gaels, who lost for the second time in their last three games - and the third time in their last six - opened scoring midway through the second period when defender Micaela Smith scored her first intercollegiate goal.
Guelph's Kelly Gribbons scored on a power play with just four seconds remaining in the period to tie the game, and then early in the third period Leigh Shilton and Marcie Landman scored in a span of a minute and 51 seconds to give Guelph a two-goal lead.
Rookie Clare McKellar scored her ninth goal of the year for Queen's at 15:12 but the Gaels couldn't gain the equalizer.
Smith, who had just one point through her first 19 OUA games, drew an assist on McKellar's goal.
The Gaels were outshot 32-21, including 10-7 in the third period. Guelph's Stephanie Nehring, who has seven shutouts this season and had allowed just three goals in her previous six games, got the goaltending win, her 15th in a row since losing to Queen's Oct. 19.
Queen's concludes its regular schedule next weekend, with games Friday at Toronto and Saturday at Ryerson. Related Articles:
