Late three-pointer gives Queen's men victory over Laurentian

Roshane Roberts nailed a three-point basket with five seconds remaining to play Saturday night to give the Queen's Golden Gaels a 72-69 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs in an Ontario University Athletics men's basketball game at the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre.
The shot capped a remarkable comeback for the Gaels, who trailed by seven points, 69-62, with less than two and a half minutes left in the game.
Roberts, a second-year arts and science student from Vaughan, was a key contributor throughout the comeback. After his turnover led to the Laurentian basket that grew the lead to seven points, he made a pair of steals and drew an assist before hitting the game-winning shot.
Laurentian had one possession left but Josh Budd - who had been 5-for-6 from beyond the arc to that point in the game - missed a three-point shot with two seconds left. The Voyageurs got the rebound but they were unable to put up another attempt.
Queen's led 23-12 at the end of the first quarter but fuelled by a 19-0 run to start the second quarter, Laurentian took a 36-32 lead into the intermission. The Gaels trailed 53-51 going into the fourth quarter, and Laurentian's lead fluctuated between two and five points for most of the period.
Laurentian still led by seven until Mike Shoveller scored with 66 seconds left. Sukhpreet Singh drained a three-pointer with 34 seconds to go and he then stole the ball and put up a jump shot that missed. Patrick Street grabbed the rebound and his shot tied the game with 24 seconds to play.
Laurentian's Alex Ratte missed a shot on the Voyageurs' subsequent trip up the floor and Nikola Misljencevic rebounded to start the possession that led to Roberts' game-winning basket.
It was not Ratte's night. The third-leading scorer in Canada was just 5-for-17 from the field and, though he played all 40 minutes, ended the game with a season-worst 13 points, more than 11 below his per-game average.
Budd was the game's top scorer with 24 points, while Tychon Carter-Newman scored 20 for Laurentian. Roberts, Singh and Street each had 14 points for Queen's, which got scoring from eight different players and won despite being outrebounded 50-31.
The win enabled the Gaels to improve to 9-9 and move to within two points of Laurentian and York, who share fourth place in the East division standings. After winning just one of their first seven games since Christmas, the Gaels have now won two straight.
As part of the Marc Alessio Memorial game, a scholarship that has been given in his memory annually since 2010 was presented Saturday to Misljencevic. Alessio played for Queen's 1987-89. He taught abroad until he was killed in Madagascar in 2009 at the age of 43.

Queen's women gained their third straight victory Saturday night, 69-50 over Laurentian.
The Gaels built an 11-point lead in the first quarter and it was unlikely the Voyageurs would overcome it in a game where they would commit 28 turnovers and the Gaels would shoot with almost 41 per cent success from outside the three-point arc.
Queen's led 37-18 at the half.
In winning for the fifth time in the last six games - the only loss in that time was by two points at division-leading Carleton - the Gaels improved to 12-6 and moved into a second-place tie with Ottawa, 57-53 loser Saturday night in Toronto.
Liz Boag, who was 4-for-5 from three-point range, scored 15 points for Queen's, 13 of them in the first half. Jenny Wright also scored 15 points for the Gaels, who got 12-point performances from Gemma Bullard and Robyn Pearson on a night when nine different players would hit the scoresheet.
Adrienne Moreau, who seems to enjoy playing against Queen's, led all scorers with 18 points for Laurentian, who fell to 4-14. In the teams' other meeting this year, Moreau had her season-best 27 points.
Queen's will host Ottawa for a doubleheader Friday at the ARC, with the women playing at 6 p.m. - with Kingston's Sarah Besselink in the lineup for the visitors - while the Gaels will host the No. 2-ranked Gee-Gees men at 8 o'clock.
