Queen's women take over first place in the OUA East

Queen's Golden Gaels moved into first place in the East division of Ontario University Athletics Saturday night with a 63-58 women's basketball victory over the Carleton Ravens at the Queen's Athletic and Recreation Centre.
Queen's and Carleton are now both 14-6, and each has two games to play. If the teams end in a tie, the Gaels would be favoured, since in their head-to-head contests, they lost to the Ravens by two points but subsequently beat them by five.
A 17-4 run in the middle of the second quarter enabled the visitors to go into halftime with a 33-24 lead but a 12-3 run by Queen's at the end of the third quarter sent the Gaels into the final period leading by two. Carleton quickly tied the score but Queen's twice led by as much as six points after that, until a three-point basket by Elizabeth Roach with 1:24 to play lifted the Ravens into a 58-58 tie.
After Roach missed a jump shot with 35 seconds left, the Gaels rebounded and called timeout. When play resumed Liz Boag hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds left to restore the three-point Queen's lead.
After a Carleton turnover Gemma Bullard missed a three-point attempt in the dying seconds for Queen's but Jenny Wright got the rebound, was fouled and made both free throws to clinch the victory.
Bullard led the Gaels with 19 points, adding a team-best six rebounds and four steals. Robyn Pearson had 14 points while Wright, 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc, scored 11 for Queen's, which won its fifth in a row and the seventh of its last eight games.
Stephanie Carr, Roach and Mackenzie Sigurdson scored 12 points apiece for Carleton, which, after a six-game winning streak in the middle of the season, has now lost two of its last three and three of its last seven.
After Ottawa lost 60-51 Saturday at York, the Gaels are assured of finishing no worse than second - and thus have gained a first-round playoff bye. They will conclude their regular schedule next weekend with games Friday at fourth-place Toronto and Saturday at fifth-place Ryerson.

The Queen's men lost for the eighth time in their 11 post-Christmas games Saturday, 91-59 to the undefeated Carleton Ravens.
The Gaels, 9-11, trailed 39-24 at halftime and Carleton went on to score 30 points in the third quarter to put the game away.
In the final home game of his Queen's career, Mackenzie Simpson led all scorers with 18 points. Roshane Roberts added 16 points to the Gaels' attack while Mike Shoveller came off the bench to score six points for Queen's, matching his season best.
Though he did not play in the fourth quarter, Tyson Hinz finished with 17 points for Carleton, while teammate Thomas Scrubb, one of five Ravens to reach double figures, added 16. In three minutes of playing time, Brody Maracle, the freshman from Holy Cross in Kingston, had three points and a pair of rebounds.
The Ravens outrebounded Queen's 46-29, including 31-13 off the defensive glass. The No. 1 team in Canada committed just 10 turnovers.
The playoff-bound Gaels, who can finish no worse than sixth in the East division but can still move up to fifth, will close their regular schedule with games Friday at last-place Toronto and Saturday at No. 6-ranked Ryerson.
