Basketball Gaels sweep doubleheader at Toronto

Queen's Golden Gaels won their sixth straight Ontario University Athletics women's basketball game Friday night, 63-58 over the Toronto Blues.
The Gaels have a chance to win the East division regular-season title tonight when they visit the Ryerson Rams for their final game. Queen's goes into the contest with a 15-6 record, the same as the Carleton Ravens - who beat Algoma 72-31 Friday night - but in a tie the Gaels will prevail for having the advantage in point differential in their two games this year with Carleton.
Playing at Toronto, the Gaels got a late three-point basket from Emily Hazlett to take a 49-35 lead into the final quarter Friday night, but the Blues chipped away and Queen's found itself leading by just four points, 60-56, when Toronto's Alicia Van Campen hit a jump shot with 37 seconds left, and again, 62-58, when Jill Stratton hit a jumper with 15 seconds to play.
Around that, however, the Gaels made three of four foul shots to clinch the win.
Jenny Wright led Queen's with 15 points, while Gemma Bullard scored 12 and Liz Boag added 10. Liane Bailey led all scorers with 17 points for Toronto, which had improved to 11-9 by winning five of its previous six games.
Robyn Pearson had a game-best 13 rebounds for Queen's, which was 7-for-15 from beyond the three-point arc and 12-for-18 from the free-throw line.
The Gaels will host a division semifinal Saturday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.

Queen's men scored the last 10 points of the game Friday night as they rallied to defeat the Varsity Blues 77-75 in Toronto.
When Toronto's Alex Hill hit a jump shot and then a three-pointer 40 seconds apart the Blues had a 74-64 lead with about two and a half minutes left in the game. The lead was eight points when Hill made the second of two foul shots with 1:55 remaining.
A basket by Ryall Stroud, a three-pointer by Roshane Roberts and a jump shot by Sukhpreet Singh over the course of the next 25 seconds brought the Gaels within a point and when Stroud made a pair of free throws Queen's led 76-75 with 36 seconds left.
First Dylan Churchill, from beyond the three-point arc, and then Dakota Laurin, with nine seconds left, missed field goals for Toronto. The Gaels rebounded the latter and killed the remainder of the clock.
It was the fifth loss in a row for the Blues, who fell to 4-17.
Queens, which led by as many as 14 points late in the second quarter, saw that advantage dwindle to five by halftime.
On a night when they would shoot better than 44 per cent from the field but less than 52 per cent from the foul line, the Gaels got 18 points from Nikola Misljencevic, who was 5-for-7 from three-point range. Stroud, Roberts and Mackenzie Simpson scored 13 points apiece for Queen's.
It was a season-best for Stroud, who hadn't scored more than seven points in a game this year.
Hill led all scorers with 35 points for the Varsity Blues, while Churchill came off the bench to score 18. It was the fifth time this year Hill, the second-leading scorer in the nation, has scored 35 points or better in a game. Churchill, who's scored less than 10 points per game this season, has averaged 17.25 points in his last four.
The Gaels, 11-10, won for the third time in their last five games. They will close their regular schedule Saturday night at No. 8 Ryerson.
