Queen's women finish first; male Gaels limp into playoffs

Queen's Golden Gaels clinched first place in the East division of Ontario University Athletics Saturday night with an 88-66 women's basketball win over the Ryerson Rams in the final game of the regular season in Toronto.
In winning their seventh game in a row - and their ninth in the last 10 games - the Gaels finished with a 16-6 record, matching the school record for victories in a single season, set in 2003-04.
Nursing just a three-point lead over the 9-12 Rams after the first quarter, the Gaels, with Liz Boag and Robyn Pearson each scoring eight points, outscored the home team 23-9 in the second quarter and the Rams never really threatened after that. Though Ryerson pulled to within 10 points with a little less than four minutes left in the game, Boag promptly sank a couple of free throws and Gemma Bullard completed a three-point play within 30 seconds to put Queen's back into a comfortable lead.
Boag finished the game with 23 points, matching her season best, while Pearson scored 16 and had a game-best 12 rebounds for Queen's. Jenny Wright, with 15 points, and Bullard, with 12, also reached double figures for the Gaels.
Mariah Nunes led Ryerson with 21 points, 12 of them in the third quarter.
Thanks to finishing first - Carleton also finished 16-6 but Queen's gets the nod for top spot by virtue of a better point differential in head-to-head play - the Gaels have a bye through the first playoff round. They will host a semifinal game Saturday against an opponent to be determined in quarter-final play this week.

The Queen's men got a good look at their first-round playoff opponent Saturday night as they closed their regular schedule with a 71-61 loss to No. 8 Ryerson.
After finishing the schedule in sixth place, the Gaels, 10-12, will face the Rams again Wednesday in a sudden-death quarter-final in Toronto.
Ryerson led by just two points after the first quarter but they exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the visiting Gaels 27-12. Down 20 at one point, Queen's rallied in the second half, closing to within six points of the lead, trailing 64-58 with a little less than three minutes to play. The Gaels, however, could get no closer.
Roshane Roberts led all scorers with 24 points for Queen's, a season best by five points. Nikola Misljencevic scored 14 points for the Gaels, despite 1-for-9 shooting from three-point range.
Ryerson, 15-6, was led by 22 points from Jamal Jones.
Queen's, 6-3 at the Christmas break but 4-9 thereafter, lost both of its regular-season contests with Ryerson, scoring 61 points each time. The Gaels lost by 20 points to the Rams at home Jan. 10.
