Gaels to face Laurier in OUA women's hockey final

Posted: February 23rd, 2014 @ 10:44pm

Queen's Golden Gaels will face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the Ontario University Athletics women's hockey final, beginning this week.

Dates for the series have not been announced.

The Gaels gained their berth in their third championship series in the last four years Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons. In a series where all the games were decided by the score of 2-1, the Gaels won the series 2-1.

Laurier also won its semifinal series 2-1, with a 2-1 win over the Toronto Blues Sunday night.

Queen's, the defending league champion, has won the OUA title two of the last three years. The other year, 2012, Laurier won it.

In the regular year Laurier, 18-3-3 and the fourth-ranked team in Canada, beat No. 8 Queen's, 16-4-4, twice, once in overtime and once in a shootout.

Laurier will come to town with a familiar face in the lineup. Sophomore centre Emily Kekewich, a La Salle Secondary School graduate, has a goal and an assist in five playoff games.
