Gaels thumped by Carleton in second-round opener
Posted: February 26th, 2014 @ 11:13pm
Queen's Golden Gaels' impressive playoff start landed with a thud in Ottawa Wednesday night, when the Carleton Ravens pinned a 6-2 defeat on them in the opening game of their Ontario University Athletics East division semifinal.
The second game of the best-of-three series will be held Friday night at the Memorial Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
The Gaels, who lost both games to Carleton in the regular year, advanced to the second round with a two-game sweep of the Ottawa Gee-Gees in an opening round that ended Friday. They were never in this game, however, falling behind 2-0 in the first period and then surrendering Carleton's third goal just 55 seconds into the second.
A goal with 85 seconds left in the middle stanza sent the Ravens into the third period with a 4-1 lead that grew to 5-1 before the Gaels scored again.
Six different players scored for No. 4-ranked Carleton, which is undefeated (16-0) since Christmas: Michael McNamee, Mitch Porowski, Joey West, Damian Cross, Linden Bahm and former Kingston Frontenac Corey Durocher. Defenceman Timothy Billingsley had three assists.
Stephane Chabot and Taylor Clements scored for Queen's, which has been eliminated from the playoffs by Carleton two of the last four years. The Gaels' loss was the fifth in a row in post-season play to the Ravens, and the first time they've given up six goals in a game all year. In fact, Queen's had surrendered more than three goals in regulation time just twice in 30 league and post-season games.
Carleton, which finished first in the division in the regular season, outshot fourth-place Queen's 27-21, and capitalized on two of three power-play opportunities. The Gaels were 1-for-4 with a man advantage.
Kevin Bailie, who hadn't given up more than four goals in a game all year - and had allowed just eight goals in his previous five games - was chased from the game after Carleton's sixth goal, with a little more than 10 minutes left in the game. Chris Clarke stopped all four shots he faced in the remainder of the game.
Francis Dupuis, who fashioned a 1.78 goals-against average in the regular year, and has three shutouts - including one in the first round in the series-clinching victory over Nipissing - collected the goaltending victory. Related Articles:
