Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Sunday, March 3, 1963
With a chance to cement their grip on first place in the Eastern Professional Hockey League, the Kingston Frontenacs instead surrender four goals in the third period and bow 6-2 to the Canadiens in Hull. The result leaves Kingston just two points ahead of Hull-Ottawa in the quest for the regular-season championship, and the first-round playoff bye that comes with it.
Red Ouellette opened the scoring for Kingston early in the second period and the Frontenacs went up by two when Cliff Pennington stripped Claude Larose of the puck at the Canadiens' blue line and went in alone to beat goaltender Cesare Maniago.
Keith McCreary and Larose scored before the period ended and then Brian Smith, Doug Senior, Bob Courcy and Chuck Hamilton scored in the third period for Hull-Ottawa.
* The third-place Sudbury Wolves, meanwhile, spent the weekend losing 7-3 at St. Louis and 3-2 in overtime in an interlocking game with Omaha. Alain Caron scored twice and Pete Ford once for St. Louis. Wolves goaltender Gerry Cheevers left Saturday's game with a bruised right hand after the first period. Chico Kuzurok, an amateur forward, finished the game in the Sudbury goal.
