Gaels eliminated from men's hockey playoffs

Carleton Ravens scored twice in the third period Sunday night and the flawless goaltending of Francis Dupuis made them good for a 2-0 victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels in an Ontario University Athletics quarter-final game in Ottawa.
The victory gives Carleton a 2-1 win in the best-of-three series, and a berth in the East division final against McGill.
Queen's was outshot in every period Sunday night, 40-27 overall, but Gaels goalie Kevin Bailie matched Dupuis' perfect night until the second minute of the third period, when Mitch Poworski scored for Carleton.
Former Kingston Frontenac Corey Durocher, who assisted on Poworski's goal, sealed the Gaels' fate when he scored into an empty net with 59 seconds left in the game.
For each it was the third goal of the post-season.
The zero was Dupuis' second shutout of the playoffs. He goes into the third round with a post-season goals-against average of 1.01 and a save percentage of .961.
It was the first time this year the Gaels, who shut out opponents three times this year, were blanked in a game. Part of the reason for that was failing each of the five times they enjoyed a man advantage.
Of the four teams that survived the first round in the East division, the Gaels were the lowest scoring side by 40 goals. As they were eliminated from the playoffs by Carleton for the third time in five years, that again was Queen's achilles heel, as the Gaels scored just four goals in the three games of the series.
After going through the first 17 games of the regular year without a regulation defeat, the Gaels stumbled home, going 5-6 the rest of the way. Fourth in the final standings at 17-6-5, Queen's was 1-5 against the three teams that finished ahead of it, 2-7 including post-season play.
