La Salle rides three-point shooting to victory in second round at OFSAA

PERTHÂ - Playing a better game in almost every respect than they did on opening day, the La Salle Black Knights defeated the James Cardinal McGuigan Wolfpack 72-52 Tuesday morning on Day 2 of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys AA basketball tournament.
The Knights, 2-0 at the 18-team championship, will play at 8:15 tonight against Ascencion of Our Lord of Mississauga, also 2-0, at Perth Collegiate.
Ascension raced to a 26-5 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat Winston Churchill, the No. 17 seed, 70-36 in its second-round game Tuesday afternoon.
In their game, the Knights dominated in all respects in the offensive half of the court. La Salle owned the glass at both ends of the floor, and they rode to victory on the strength of 16 three-point baskets.
Bruce Burns didn't score in the first quarter, but once he found his shooting eye, he lit McGuigan up for six three-pointers, five of them in the second half. He finished the game with 22 points, as did teammate Tanner Graham, who hit four times from beyond the arc.
The Knights solved their turnover problem and they also shot better from the free-throw line, from where they were 9-for-12, a significant improvement from 9-for-19 in their one-point victory Monday.
Jesse Graham, who also hit four threes, finished with 19 points for La Salle, the tournament's seventh-seeded team.
McGuigan, who entered the tournament as its 10th seed, lost its opening game by four points. Against La Salle, the Wolfpack had virtually no inisde game and their three-point shooting wasn't enough to stay close. McGuigan played only six deep for most of the game, and by the third quarter its players appeared too tired to challenge La Salle's three-point threat.
The Wolfpack was led by Jon-Ross Walters, who scored 19 points, and Christian Taylor, who scored 15.
La Salle led 36-24 at halftime and McGuigan never got close to that lead, which grew to 22 points at its largest, midway through the fourth quarter, at which point La Salle coach Karen Graham emptied her bench.
After losing the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association final, the Knights, 35-5 this year, have now won five in a row, three straight at the Eastern Ontario championship and two here.
