Goaltender Kevin Bailie of the Queen's Golden Gaels has been named most valuable player in the East division of Ontario University Athletics.In his rookie season with the Gaels, Bailie had the fourth-best goals-against average in Canada, 1.98 - the four ahead of him all played fewer than Bailie's 20 games - and the second-best save percentage, .934. He had two shutouts.The Gaels allowed just 57 goals this year, fewest in Ontario by 10. Only one team in Canada, Alberta, surrendered less.Bailie was also selected as the division's rookie of the year, and its first-team all-star goalie.As division MVP, Bailie is a finalist for the Sen. Joseph Sullivan award as the outstanding player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. No player from an East team in the OUA has won that award since Paul Stothart of Queen's won it in back-to-back seasons, 1981-82.Bailie is also in the running for the Clare Drake award. No player from Queen's has ever been named national rookie of the year.After playing in the Ontario Hockey League with Oshawa and London, Bailie, from Belleville, finished his junior career last year in Summerside, P.E.I., where he helped the host team reach the final of the RBC Cup tournament, the national junior A championship.He was a significant part of the Gaels' rise this season, as they improved seven games from last year (17-6-5 from 10-11-7) and advanced past the first round of playoffs for the first time in 10 years. The 17 wins matched the most ever in a season in Queen's hockey history.The other big reason for the Gaels' resurgence has also been recognized by the OUA. Brett Gibson was named the division's coach of the year for the second time in his career. He last won the award in 2008.Chris Van Laren of Queen's, a 23-year-old defenceman from Kingston in his first season with the Gaels, was named to the East division's second all-star team. He tied for the team lead this year with 20 points, sixth best among OUA defencemen.Among the West division all-stars are former Kingston Frontenacs Zach Harnden and Cody Alcock.Harnden was named the West's most valuable player after he had 18 goals and 41 points in his third year at Western, both career bests. His points total ranked him sixth in the league. The Canadian rookie of the year in 2012, Harnden was a second-team OUA all-star last year and was named a the first-team all-star forward for the first time.Alcock, a 14-goal scorer in his first season with the Lakehead Thunderwolves, was named to the West all-rookie team.
