Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Tuesday, March 5, 1963
Hull-Ottawa begins the week shorthanded, after Red Berenson is recalled by the parent Montreal Canadiens. Montreal already has defenceman Terry Harper and left winger Billy McCreary from the Hull-Ottawa roster, but the EPHL team still manages to defeat the Muskegon Zephyrs of the International Hockey League 3-2 to move back into a first-place tie with the Kingston Frontenacs.
It was a "close but uninteresting battle, witnessed by 751 spectators, one of the smallest turnouts of the season," the Ottawa Citizen reported. Doug Senior, a Kingston native, inadvertently scores the winning goal for the Canadiens with less than six minutes to play in the third period, when a shot from Chuck Hamilton hits his skate, then his stick, and rolls into the open side of the net.
Playing coach Billy Carter and Keith McCreary scored the other Hull-Ottawa goals.
In other interlocking games, Sudbury gained a 5-2 win over St. Paul and the Port Huron Flags edged St. Louis 2-1. Marc Dufour scored twice for Sudbury, giving him a share of second place in the league scoring race with 78 points.
Tomorrow night, Muskegon will visit the Frontenacs. The Kingston club announced today Randy Miller, Wayne Schultz and Ron Willy will not dress for the game, to reach the maximum of 13 players allowed for interlocking play.
