Holy Cross, Frontenac both 1-2 at Spring Thaw lacrosse tourney
Posted: April 15th, 2014 @ 1:42pm
Holy Cross Crusaders and Frontenac Falcons each finished a win from three games Monday in the annual Spring Thaw high school field lacrosse tournament at the Minto fields in Nepean.
Holy Cross got its victory in its first game, 4-1 over Franco Cite of Ottawa. Brothers Bryce and Hunter Drew scored two goals apiece for the Crusaders, who held a two-goal lead over South Carleton of Richmond for much of their second game before regulation time ended with the teams in a 2-2 tie.
South Carleton prevailed in what is known as a Brave Heart tiebreaker, whereby overtime begins with two players facing off, and the winner gets a breakaway attempt on the opponent's goaltender.
The Crusaders were defeated 8-0 by St. Francis Xavier of Gloucester in their final game, one they finished without regular goalie Matt Marino, who was ejected.
With just two schools fielding teams, lacrosse is not an official sport in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association, but teams playing a minimum of 10 games in the spring are eligible to enter an eastern Ontario playoff to seek a berth in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations festival, June 4-6 in Mississauga and Brampton.
In game two, the Crusaders faced St. Francis Xavier and were blanked 8 - 0. Penalties included holding by Nolan MacInnis, Hunter Drew was ejected from the game, as was goalie Matt Marino.
Frontenac's field lacrosse team was also in the tournament also finishing 1- 2 - 0. Related Articles:
