Randy Zabukovec tops local runners at 118th Boston Marathon

Randy Zabukovec posted the best time among several Kingston-area runners who competed Monday in the 118th Boston Marathon.

On a day when the temperature reached 17 degrees under a partly cloudy sky, Zabukovec, 44, the varsity cross-country coach at St. Lawrence College, completed the historic 42.195-kilometre course in 3 hours 27 seconds, finishing 2,444th in the field of 35,671.

Chiropractor Sheldon Cook of Inverary wasn't far behind. A former track star at Sydenham High School, Cook, 44, was 3,186th across the line, after 3 hours, 4 minutes and 49 seconds.

The top local female runner was Leslie Reade of Sydenham, 43, who was 1,657th among women, 8,322nd overall.

Meb Keflezighi, a three-time Olympian from San Diego, Calif, won the race in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds, 11 seconds ahead of Kenyan Wilson Chebet. Rita Jeptoo of Kenya defended her women's title, completing the course in 2:18:57, 62 seconds ahead of Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia.

The record field comprised 19,579 men and 16,092 women.

Other local runners who cracked the top third of their respective fields were Mark Allen of Kingston (3:15:11; 4,717th among men); Dale Engen of Kingston (3:16:14; 4868th), Ryan Christian of Kingston (3:19:18, 5402nd), and Royal Military College grad Simon Sukstorf (3:27:33; 6,781st).

* Dale Engen, Kingston, 46: 3:16:14; 5,531st overall; 4,868th among men.

* Ryan Christian, Kingston: 28, 3:19:18; 6,273rd overall; 5,402nd among men.

* Leslie Reade, Sydenham, 43, 3:26:52, 8,322nd overall; 1,657th among women.

* Simon Sukstorf, Toronto (RMC grad), 52: 3:27:33; 8,531st overall; 6,781st among men.

* Dalton Cole, Kingston, 49: 3:39:32; 12,286th overall; 8,672nd among men.

* Heidi Sasso, Kingston, 26, 3:44:40: 13,802nd overall; 4,464th among women.

* Jim Makelos, Kingston, 60: 3:54:26; 16,544th overall; 10,491st among men.

* Sandra Sukstorf, Toronto (RMC grad), 50: 3:55:48; 16,931st overall; 6,280th among women.

* Laura Wiens, Lyndhurst, 52: 4:15:17; 21,000th overall; 8,584th among women.

* David Markotich, Harrowsmith, 47: 4:31:57; 22,739th overall; 13,133rd among men.

* Laura Prociuk, Harrowsmith, 46: 4:32:09; 22,755th overall; 9,616th among women.
