Soccer season opens with some nasty play

Posted: April 22nd, 2014 @ 10:16pm

If the soccer players in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association were happy to be back on the field Tuesday, they sure didn't show it, as yellow cards for objectionable conduct were flashed with startling frequency.

At Tindall Field, seven of the cautionary cards were presented - four of them to the Granite Ridge Gryphons as they opened the senior boys season with a 4-2 win over the La Salle Black Knights.

The Sydenham Golden Eagles and Ernestown Eagles were just as snarly. Four yellows were flashed in their chippy game - two to each team - as Sydenham prevailed 2-1 at Queen's upper west campus field.

For Granite Ridge, Travis Tyson scored twice while Taylor Meeks and Luke Asselstine scored once each. Braden Elliot and Connor Smith replied for La Salle.

Clark Hood and Joel Wilkinson scored for Sydenham, offsetting a goal by Ernestown's Brandon Johnston.

In other games,

Adam Alcorn scored twice and Mitchell Barr earned the clean sheet as the Holy Cross Crusaders blanked the Loyalist Lancers 5-0 at west campus, while Mark Lappan scored three times to lead the Kingston Blues to a 5-0 win over the Marie-Rivier Dragons at Tindall Field.

Eric Freitas, Ryan Kinsella and Emmanuel Onwueomeodo scored the other Holy Cross goals, while down on main campus KC also got goals from Isaac McFayden and Dana Lew and shutout goalkeeping from Pierre Boucher.
