Frontenacs 50th

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, March 6, 1963
Kingston scores four times in the second period to break open a one-goal game and the Frontenacs, the highest-scoring team in the EPHL, whip the visiting Muskegon Zephyrs of the International league 9-4 at the Community Centre. The win moves Kingston back into first place, two points ahead of idle Hull-Ottawa.
Dick Cherry had his first three-goal performance of the season for Kingston, while Billy Knibbs scored two goals for the second time in the last three games. Cherry, a part-time player who misses most of the team's road games while he embarks on a teaching career, ran his goal total for the season to 22.
Red Ouellette, Don Blackburn, Jeannot Gilbert and Cliff Pennington also scored for the Frontenacs, who pumped 60 shots at Muskegon goaltender Denny Jordan. The goals by Ouellette, Blackburn and Gilbert gave that line 101 for the season (Ouellette 31, Blackburn 37 and Gilbert 33).
Defenceman Ken Stephanson had what Whig-Standard sports writer Ron Brown described as his finest game of the season, setting an early pace with some punishing bodychecks. Referee Dalt MacArthur was forced out of the game midway through the third period when he was struck on the knee by a shot.
* In an interlocking game in Minneapolis, the Sudbury Wolves defeated the Millers 8-4. The Wolves' line of Len Ronson, Marc Dufour and Gord Labossiere had 15 points, with Labossiere leading the way with a goal and five assists. The newly arrived Ronson scored twice and had three assists.
