Adam Burggraf, Hailey Wolfgram each win twice at Hungerford Invitational track meet

Adam Burggraf of Bayridge burst onto the high school track and field scene in impressive style Saturday, winning two events by huge margins at the 38th annual Hungerford Classic track and field meet at Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville.
Competing in midget boys division, Burggraf won the discus with a throw of 37.49 metres, almost six metres better than runner-up Justin Smith of Arnprior.
In the javelin, Burggraf had a best attempt of 43.03 metres, almost 10 metres beyond than the second-place throw of Sydenham's Jimmy Smith, 33.96 metres.
Brenna MacDougall of Regiopolis Notre Dame decisively broke the record in winning senior girls 3,000 metres, where she finished in 9 minutes, 50.26 seconds, 35 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and almost six and a half seconds better than the meet record, 9:56.68, set in 2102 by Rachel Faulds of Trenton.
The other meet record broken by a Kingston-area athlete came in junior girls 80-metre hurdles, where Nicole Zohorsky of Bayridge stopped the clock in 12.31 seconds, shaving 32 one-hundredths of a second off the mark set in 2009 by Shareen Harris of Scarborough Mary Ward. Zohorsky also was third in the 300-metre hurdles.
Those performances were among 14 first-place finishes by athletes from Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association schools.
Besides Burggraf, the only double winner was Regi's Hailey Wolfgram. The OFSAA bronze medalist as a midget last year in shot put, she won both junior girls shot (9.83 metres, winning by almost a metre) and discus, where her best throw, 28.95 metres, was more than four metres ahead of the field. Wolfgram also finished third in javelin.
Four of the other event winners are from Holy Cross: Abby Lanzo (midget girls 100 metres, 13.45 seconds); Mary Besselink (midget girls high jump, 1.45 metres); Derien LeBlanc (senior boys 200 metres, 23.66 seconds) and Devin LeBlanc (junior boys 200 metres, 23.87 seconds, with a margin of victory of just three one-hundredths of a second).
The LeBlancs and Lanzo also had second-place finishes, in the 100 metres and 200 metres, respectively.
Undoubtedly the closest race of the day was the senior girls 800 metres, where the top three runners, Paige Nock of Courtice, Nicole Armstrong of Sydenham and Heather Jaros of La Salle, were separated by just 83 one-hundredths of a second. The lead pack, who all finished in under two minutes, 17 seconds, was almost 13 seconds ahead of the remainder of the field.
The members of the Physi-Kult running group dominated the senior girls distance races. In addition to MacDougall's victory in the 3,000, Armstrong, Jaros and MacDougall finished 1-2-3 in the 1,500 metres - with Armstrong winning in 4 minutes, 55.98 seconds - and Jaros was second in the 3,000 metres.
Sydenham's Ben Trickey had a victory among his three top-three performances. It came in the senior boys 400 metres (53.02 seconds). Trickey was also second in both the 200 metres and 400-metre hurdles.
The other winning effort by a KASSAA athlete was delivered by Ben Cross, in senior boys triple jump (12.16 metres). He was also second in javelin.
In addition to Jaros and Trickey, Paul Bates of Regi had three top-three performances, with second-place finishes in midget boys 1,500 and 3,000 metres to go with a third-place effort in the 800 metres.
Next on the high school athletics schedule is the Michelle Foley Invitational next weekend in Belleville, followed by the county championships, May 15-16, when the discus and javelin will be contested at Richardson Stadium and the remainder of the meet will be held at Caraco Field.
