Holy Cross sits alone atop senior boys soccer standings

Not only did the Holy Cross Crusaders put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack Monday afternoon, they helped to create a huge logjam in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior boys soccer standings.
With their 2-1 victory over the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers in one of the annual Fr. Stan soccer matches, the Crusaders, 5-0, moved four points ahead of the second-place Frontenac Falcons, who Monday battled the Sydenham Golden Eagles to a scoreless draw.
Frontenac sits second, 3-0-2, but in a giant cluster just one point back at 3-1-1 are Regi, Sydenham, the Kingston Blues and Bayridge Blazers. KC defeated the Loyalist Lancers 4-1 Monday while Bayridge blanked the Marie-Rivier Dragons 6-0.
At Machin Field, in one of four games played to honour the memory of Fr. Stan Kurusumuthu, who died suddenly after suffering a heart attack while coaching a Regi team, the Crusaders spotted Regi an early 1-0 lead when Jordan Pringle scored on a shot from outside the box.
Holy Cross tied the game when a cross from Eric Freitas was headed into the top corner by Devon Christian. Freitas later set up the decisive goal with another cross, to Adam Alcorn.
Crusaders goalkeeper Miguel Martins denied a breakaway and stopped a point-blank shot to preserve the win.
Being back on their home field after an exceptionally soggy spring seemed to agree with the Blazers, who got two goals from Josh Barrett and shutout goalkeeping from Josh Reisling in the victory over winless Marie-Rivier. Mac Campbell, Bilal Mufti, Spencer Dungey and Tholfikar Kadhum shared the other goals for Bayridge.
At Loyalist, the teams were tied at halftime but Ben Postumus scored three times in the second half to lead the Blues. Postumus set up the game's first goal, when his corner kick was headed into the net by Josh MacKeigan. Loyalist's Taylor Pettingill tied the game late in the first half.
Elsewhere Monday, the Ernestown Eagles won for the second time in three games, 3-2 over the La Salle Black Knights, and the Napanee Golden Hawks gained their first win of the season, 3-0 over the Granite Ridge Gryphons.
In the game at Napanee, Dakota Clancy scored twice for the Golden Hawks, while Matt Herrington scored once. Matt Amey posted the shutout.
