Regi prevails in clash of undefeated girls soccer teams
Posted: May 6th, 2014 @ 3:12am
Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers emerged from Monday's battle of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association's last two undefeated senior girls soccer teams with sole possession of first place.
Regi goalkeeper Kristina Nuvoloni preserved her team's 3-2 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders when she stopped a penalty shot in the final two minutes of the game.
First-half goals by Birdget Mulholland and Kaitlyn Balfour gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead that vanished in the second half when Holy Cross scored on a penalty kick and from a scramble in front of the net.
A free kick by Balfour was converted into the go-ahead goal by striker Emily Rowsell, one that enabled the Panthers to improve their record to 4-0.
Previously unbeaten Holy Cross, 3-1, fell all the way into fourth place as the Kingston Blues thumped the Loyalist Lancers 7-0 and the Frontenac Falcons shaded the Sydenham Golden Eagles 1-0.
With their wins, KC and Frontenac stayed on Regi's heels, as they both improved to 4-1.
Evie Streight scored three goals to lead the Blues, who got one goal apiece from Ella Bastien, Sarah Duncan, Katey Gilmour and Carley Gordon.
Elsewhere, the surprising Marie-Rivier Dragons, who were shut out in their first two games, improved to 2-2 as they posted their second consecutive 7-0 victory, this time over the winless Bayridge Blazers; the La Salle Black Knights moved into a fifth-place tie with Sydenham at 3-2 with a 4-0 win over the Ernestown Eagles, and the Granite Ridge Gryphons earned their first point of the season in a 1-1 tie with the Napanee Golden Hawks.
Playing at La Salle, the Knights got two goals from Sara Edgar and one each from Brooklyn Feijo and Chelsea Van Camp in support of the shutout goalkeeping of Kristin Treitz.
