Loyalist keeps senior soccer playoff hopes alive

Posted: May 7th, 2014 @ 11:05pm

Loyalist Lancers climbed back into the playoff picture Wednesday, with a 4-0 Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior boys soccer victory over the Marie-Rivier Dragons.

With the win, and Granite Ridge's 3-1 loss to the Ernestown Eagles, the Lancers moved into an eighth-place tie with the Gryphons and a share of the league's final post-season berth going into the last day of the regular schedule Monday.

Who will advance will be decided then, when Granite Ridge visits Loyalist.

The winner of that game will earn the dubious distinction of meeting the Holy Cross Crusaders in the quarter-finals a week from now. Holy Cross, 6-0, clinched first place Wednesday with a 1-0 win over the Bayridge Blazers.

Jeremy McBride, Taylor Pettingill, Kaelan Ingersoll and Brendan Lowry shared the scoring for Loyalist, which won for the second time in its last three games. The Lancers got shutout goalkeeping from Mathew Hamilton.

Brayden Roy headed a corner kick by Nick Gallagher into the Bayridge net for the only goal of the game at Holy Cross. Miguel Martins made two splendid saves to preserve the shutout as Bayridge fell to 3-2-1.

In Wednesday's other games, the Frontenac Falcons, 4-0-2, retained sole possession of second place with an 8-0 win over the La Salle Black Knights; the Sydenham Golden Eagles, 4-1-1, stayed within one point of the Falcons with a 4-1 win over Napanee and the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers and Kingston Blues remain tied at 3-1-2 after battling to a scoreless draw at Regi.

Joel Wilkinson, Sam Moyse, Curtis Reilly and Clark Hood each scored one of the home team's goals in the game at Sydenham, while Dakota Clancy replied for Napanee.
