Kings drop season opener 10-2 in Cornwall
Posted: May 8th, 2014 @ 11:20pm
CORNWALL - Kingston Kings dropped the opening game of their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season here Thursday night, 10-2 to the three-time defending East divison champion Cornwall Celtics.
The Kings scored first, by Zach Masterson, less than two minutes into the game, but the Celtics answered just six seconds later. Kingston failed to capitalize on three consecutive Cornwall penalties - the Celtics played six of the next nine minutes shorthanded - and then Brandon Perras scored a shorthanded goal midway through the period to give the home team a lead it would never give up.
That proved to be prophetic for the Kings, who finished the night 0-for-9 on the power play, with three shorthanded goals against.
The other telling statistic for the Kings was shots on goal, where the Celtics, who have never lost to Kingston at home, had a 53-14 advantage.
Kingston's Cain Brown scored his first junior goal in the second period, with the teams running three on three, cutting the gap to 6-2. As was the case with Kingston's first goal, however, Cornwall promptly replied, as rookie Derek Lister scored just 25 seconds later.
Lister, Perras and Ryan Dewar scored two goals apiece for the Celtics, who got their other goals from Conner Thompson, Brock Daze, Scott Hope and former Brockville junior Deven Primeau.
Nic McFarlane made 43 saves for the Kingston, which killed all five Cornwall power plays. The Kings played without their top returning scorer, Josh Smith, who had a work commitment.
Kingston resumes play Friday night in Ottawa, as the home-opening guests for the Gloucester Griffins. Related Articles:
