Four Gaels in Saturday's East-West Bowl

Posted: May 9th, 2014 @ 2:59pm

Four members of the Queen's Golden Gaels will be playing Saturday in the 12th annual East-West Bowl football game in London.

Game time at Western's TD Stadium is 1 p.m.

The game is a showcase for players from Canadian universities who are entering their CFL draft year who are nominated by their respective coaches. Selections are made from the list of candidates put forward.

Running back Jesse Andrews, offensive lineman Nick Romanchuk and defensive back Yann Dika-Balotoken will play for the East team, for which Gaels coach Pat Sheahan is one of the assistant coaches.

For some reason, Queen's defensive back Brendan Morgan will play for the West, as will Concordia kicker Keegan Treloar.

The East team is comprises athletes from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences, as well as the four easternmost Ontario teams - Carleton, Ottawa, Queen's and Toronto. The West lineup is composed of players from the other seven Ontario schools and the Canada West conference.

Only four teams have more representatives than Queen's - Western, with seven, and Laval, Montreal and Acadia, with five apiece.

Players have spent the week practising and engaging in various forms of fitness and skill testing.

The West has won seven of the 11 games. Last year, with Gaels Sam Sabourin, Andrew Lue, Derek Wiggan and Billy McPhee in the lineup, the East was edged 18-17. After the West won the first five games, the East won four of the next five before last year.
