Third-period collapse dooms Kings
Posted: May 23rd, 2014 @ 2:08am
Whitby Warriors scored five goals in the third period Thursday night to defeat the Kingston Kings 9-5 in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game at Centre 70.
The win allowed Whitby to remain undefeated all-time against Kingston. The Warriors are now 10-0 versus the Kings in league and playoff contests.
The teams were tied 4-4 after two periods. Kingston overcame a 3-1 deficit with three straight goals in a span of 57 seconds early in the second period but a shorthanded goal by Whitby's Josh Nicholson stopped the bleeding. The Warriors scored twice in the first three minutes of the third period and that lead was never seriously threatened.
Connor Scott led the visitors with a goal and four assists. Jacob Mark, Mark Pryor, Stefan Trancogna, Wes Phillips, Darryl Sheppard, Matt Latin and Brett Kingston shared the other goals for Whitby, which improved to 3-1.
Austin Maracle had a goal and two assists for the Kings. Kaleb Bingley, with two, Zach Masterson and Logan Rose also scored for Kingston, which played without its leading scorer, Josh Smith, who had a work commitment.
The Kings, who fell to 1-2-1, were outshot for the third time in four games, this time 45-34. On the power play they were dreadful, 0-for-3 with a shorthanded goal against, statistics that hide the fact Kingston had a two-man advantage for a full two minutes midway through the second period - when the score was tied 4-4 - and had a six-minute power play early in the third, shortly after the Warriors went ahead 6-4.
Kingston resumes play with a rare Saturday night home game, against the Huntsville Hawks. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Related Articles:
