Kings bow to Cornwall
Posted: May 30th, 2014 @ 12:18am
Matt Bourassa and Brandon Labelle each enjoyed five-point games Thursday night to lead the Cornwall Celtics to a 9-4 victory over the Kingston Kings in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game at Centre 70.
The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period, a period when Kingston killed all four of its man-short situations covering 8 minutes and 44 seconds. Though they gave up two power-play goals in the first 40 seconds of the second period, the Kings were still in good shape late in the period after a goal by Kaleb Bingley brought them back to one goal down, at 4-3, and an ensuing Cornwall penalty put Kingston on a late power play.
Rather than capitalize, however, the Kings gave up a shorthanded goal by Bourassa - his ninth goal in just three games this year. The Celtics killed another penalty early in the third period and when that was finished they scored two goals, 24 seconds apart, to take a 7-3 lead.
Bourassa, Labelle and Ryan Dewar each scored two goals for Cornwall, which got its other goals from Tyler Akins, Tristan Thompson and Brock Daze. Austin Maracle, with his second shorthanded goal of the young season, and Jonah Lewis and Michael Latour, each with their first goal of the year, scored the other Kingston goals.
The three-time defending champion Celtics, 5-1, moved into a first-place tie with Peterborough in the Far East division. The Kings, meanwhile, stretched a winless streak to four games as they fell to 1-4-1, and remain two points ahead of last-place Gloucester.
The Kings will resume play next Thursday in Cornwall. Related Articles:
