Shorthanded Kings succumb to Shamrox
Posted: June 21st, 2014 @ 3:02am
BOWMANVILLE - Kingston Kings continued to struggle with a depleted lineup Friday night, as they dropped a 25-4 decision to the Clarington Shamrox in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game.
Beset by injuries and work commitments, the Kings were able to muster just 12 runners for the game, including three players - Hunter Drew, Connor Durant and goaltender Foster Beaton - who were playing just the second game of their junior careers, and another, two-year veteran Shannon Hill, who came out of "retirement" to play his first game of the season.
The offensive challenge faced by the Kings was illustrated by the fact that of the dozen non-goaltenders in uniform for Kingston Friday, seven have yet to score their first goal in junior competition.
Clarington, winner of three of the last four league championships, took full advantage, as the Shamrox scored four goals in a span of less than two minutes in the middle of the first period to bump an early two-goal lead to 6-0. It was 10-0 after the opening period, 11-0 before Kingston scored and 16-3 going into the third. The Shamrox kept their foot squarely on the gas in the final 20 minutes, outscoring the visitors 9-1.
In all, the Shamrox outshot the Kings 72-22.
Clarington, first-place team in the Mid East division, improved to 10-1 thanks largely to the efforts of four players: Davis Moore, who had six goals and four assists, Aaron Woods, who had five goals and four assists, Matt Holliday, who had four goals and five assists, and Dylan Savory, who scored three times and added seven assists before he was ejected for taunting Kingston fans after scoring his team's all-important 23rd goal with less than seven minutes left in the game.
Logan Rose, with two, Eric Brick and Jonah Lewis scored for Kingston. Kaleb Bingley had two assists.
Liam Brick and Nolan MacInnis, both of whom were hurt in Thursday's loss at home to Peterborough, joined teammates Zach Masterson, Austin Maracle and J.P. DiFilippo on the shelf. Bryce Drew and Stu Johnston were among those with a work commitment.
The loss, Kingston's ninth in a row, leaves the Kings with a 1-10-1 record, one point behind third-place Gloucester in the Far East division basement. The 25 goals surrendered was the most allowed by a Kingston junior team - and the 21-goal margin of defeat the largest - since the Cavaliers were beaten 29-5 by Peterborough June 28, 2010.
The Kings resume play next week with a home-and-home series with the Peterborough Lakers, starting Thursday at 8 p.m. at Centre 70. Related Articles:
