Kings release leading scorer Josh Smith
Posted: June 21st, 2014 @ 3:03am
Kingston Kings Friday released their leading goal scorer, Josh Smith, to the Innisfil Saints.
Smith, a civil engineering student at Queen's University in his final junior year, had asked to rejoin the team with which he began his junior career before coming to Kingston for the 2013 season.
After a 32-goal season last year, tied for second in the league, Smith had 21 goals this season even though, at the time of his release, he had played just six of Kingston's 11 games due to work commitments. His 53 goals were the most among active Kings, and second only to Kyle Aylesworth's 79 among career leaders in the modern era.
Innisfil was one of several teams that had inquired about the availability of Smith as the signing deadline approached.
Smith played 22 games for the Kings, scoring 53 goals and 86 points, both second in the team's modern (post-2009) era.
Only three players in team history have scored seven goals in a game, and Smith is the only one to do it twice.
All-time Smith ranks 13th in points, 11th in goals and his points-per-game average, 3.91, is fourth all-time, behind only Hugh McDermid (4.18), Norm Williamson (4.08) and Bryan Alexander (4.06), all of whom played in the 1970s. Related Articles:
