Kings lose 10th straight game

Kingston Kings continued to struggle with an inexperienced and depleted lineup Thursday night, as they dropped a 17-4 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League decision to the Mid East division-leading Peterborough Lakers at Centre 70.
It was the 10th straight defeat for the Kings, who fell to 1-11-1 and remain in last place in the Far East division, one point behind third-place Gloucester.
Last night's game was tied 1-1 after six minutes when Peterborough slowly took over. It was 6-1 after the first period and 9-2 going into the third, when the Lakers scored on their first four shots - five goals by the time two minutes and 21 seconds had been played - to turn the game into a 14-2 romp.
Peterborough, with just 13 runners in the lineup, got a 12-point performance from Cole McWilliams, who long ago surpassed the league's single-season scoring record (76 points, set by Brandon Johnson of Peterborough in 2011). The 12-point effort, which included two goals, matched his season best and put him over the century mark, with 104 points in 14 games.
In three games against Kingston in the last two weeks, McWilliams has amassed 30 points.
Mike Cavanagh and Adam Churchill scored three goals apiece for Peterborough, with Churchill adding four assists. Colton Armstrong, Dalton Hills, Cam Crowe and Jake Mitchell, with two goals apiece, and Riley Venton, with one, completed scoring for the Lakers, won won their eighth game in a row to improve to 13-2. Armstrong drew seven assists.
Zach Masterson, returning to the Kingston lineup after missing three games with a shoulder injury, scored three goals for the Kings and assisted on the other, by Logan Rose.
The Kings, beset by injuries and players attending high school graduations, played the game with 14 runners, a lineup that included three players making their junior debuts - midget Jack Boka and intermediates Alex Garrett and Mitch Morden. Among the 14, only four had scored a goal in junior competition this year, for a total of 27.
Nic McFarlane started the game in goal for the Kings and though he gave up nine goals in the first two periods, he made some brilliant saves among the 47 shots he faced. Rookie Foster Beaton, who entered the game after Peterborough's first three goals in the third period, gave up goals on the first two shots he faced, but just three more - on 24 shots - the rest of the way.
The Kings, with three games left on their regular schedule, resume play Friday night in Peterborough.
