Kings exhibit strong performance in losing effort
Posted: June 27th, 2014 @ 11:23pm
PETERBOROUGH - Kingston Kings outscored the Far East division-leading Peterborough Lakers in the third period but they couldn't prevent a 10-4 defeat in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game Friday night at the Kinsmen Civic Centre.
For the beleaguered Kings, who have now lost 11 in a row, it was a moral victory of sorts, given that the powerful Lakers had administered beatings of 23-6, 20-7 and 17-4 on the Kings in the last two weeks.
Nic McFarlane played a splendid game in goal for the Kings - official shots on goal were not kept, but 60 by the Lakers would be a conservative estimate - and each of the 13 runners at Kingston's disposal acquitted themselves well to the end. It remained an offensively challenged lineup, however, as those 13 players had combined to score just 26 goals this year going into the game. This was the fourth game in a row Kingston ended with four goals.
It was 4-1 Peterborough at the end of the first period and the Lakers scored four in a row to start the second, the last two 28 seconds apart to take the score from 6-1 to 8-1. The home team led 9-2 going into the third and Kingston outscored it 2-1 in the final 20 minutes.
It was the first time the Kings have outscored an opponent in a period since the second period against Innisfil (4-3) June 15, 12 periods ago.
Bryce Drew led Kingston with two goals and an assist. Jonah Lewis and Eric Brick scored once each, and the fiesty Brick was a chronic thorn in the Lakers' side with aggressive play throughout. Logan Rose collected three assists.
Drew now has nine goals and 21 points in eight games.
Peterborough, which played without league scoring champion Cole McWilliams, got three goals from Cam Crowe and two each from Riley Venton and Mike Cavanagh. Colton Armstrong, Tyler Blumberg and Nic Saltern shared the others.
The win clinched first place for the Lakers. It was their ninth in a row as they finished their regular schedule 14-2.
Kingston, with two games left in the regular year, suddenly has a meaningful game on the horizon, Wednesday in Gloucester. The Kings, 1-12-1, trail the Griffins by a point in the battle for third place, and whoever wins that game will avoid a first-round playoff date with Peterborough (and instead draw the second-place Cornwall Celtics). In the three previous meetings this year, each team has a road victory and a share of a 12-12 overtime tie.
The Kings will conclude the home portion of their regular schedule Thursday night at Centre 70 against Cornwall. Related Articles:
