Kings face crucial test in Ottawa

A team that has struggled all season long finds itself with a tangible goal as the regular Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League schedule enters its final week.
The Kingston Kings, 1-12-1, can escape the Far East division basement Wednesday night with a win over the Gloucester Griffins in Ottawa. That's because the Griffins, 1-12-2, haven't exactly distinguished themselves this season, either.
Alas, the Kings have only themselves to blame for being in this situation. They've split their three games to date with Gloucester, with each team claiming a road victory and the teams engaging in a 12-12 overtime tie in Kingston May 15.
That tie was the first game in 32, dating to June 2012, that Gloucester didn't lose. The Griffins' 17-10 win in Kingston June 12 is the only one of 48 league and playoff games since then that Gloucester has won.
The quest to finish third carries a dubious prize, a first-round playoff date with the three-time defending division champion Cornwall Celtics. That prospect, however, seems more palatable for the Kings, who lost four games to the first-place Peterborough Lakers in the last two weeks.
The Kings will be drawing on their intermediate affiliate in Nepean for player help Wednesday, as injuries and work commitments continue to plague the team.
Kingston will conclude its home schedule Thursday at 8 p.m. at Centre 70, when the Cornwall Celtics will visit.
