Kings drop regular-season finale
Posted: July 4th, 2014 @ 12:14am
Kingston Kings ended the regular Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season at Centre 70 Thursday night with a 17-6 loss to the Cornwall Celtics.
The Kings finished the season with 13 straight defeats that led to a 1-14-1 record. It's the third time in the six years of the modern junior era in Kingston that the team has finished in last place, but the first time since 2010.
Thursday night's game started particularly badly for the Kings, who found themselves trailing 3-0 before they ever had possession of the ball. Cornwall won the opening draw and the subsequent draws after each of its first two goals - both in the game's first 37 seconds - and the Celtics scored on each possession.
The visitors led 7-2 after the first period and took the lead to 12-2 before Kingston scored twice in the last two minutes of the second.
Cornwall's victory stretched a couple of unpleasant streaks for the Kings, who have not beaten Cornwall in 11 games dating to May, 2012. It also stretched a home-floor winless streak to nine games, dating to the final game of the 2103 regular season.
Cornwall's Tyler Akins had fashioned a hat-trick by the time the game was eight minutes old. Matt Bourassa and Ryan Dewar also scored three goals each for the Celtics while Quin MacDonell scored twice. Tristan Thompson, Nate Sanseverino, Brandon Perras, Blain MacKay and Brandon Labelle shared the other Cornwall goals.
Logan Rose had two goals and an assist for the Kings, who got their other goals from Hunter Drew, Zach Masterson, Nolan MacInnis and Brad Lauzon, the ex-Celtic who scored his first goal of the year.
Cornwall took 64 shots on a pair of Kingston goaltenders, while the Kings managed just 25 on the Cornwall goal. The Celtics were 2-for-4 on the power play, while Kingston was 0-for-6, with a pair of shorthanded goals against.
The Kings will open their first-round playoff series with the regular-season Far East division champion Peterborough Lakers Sunday, at Centre 70, at 8 p.m. The best-of-three division semifinal will resume Monday night in Peterboroough. Related Articles:
