Kings drop playoff opener
Posted: July 7th, 2014 @ 1:06am
Peterborough Lakers opened their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs with a 10-2 win over the Kingston Kings Sunday night at Centre 70.
Game 2 of the best-of-three Far East division semifinal will be played Monday night in Peterborough.
Severe underdogs in the series, the Kings, 1-14-1 in the regular year, had the regular-season champion Lakers, 14-2, checked to a virtual standstill in the first period, as rookie Eric Brick shadowed the league's leading scorer, Cole McWilliams. McWilliams, who finished the year with a record 103 points, scored or assisted on more than 51 per cent of his team's goals in games he played during the season but through the first 11 minutes of the game he barely touched the ball under Brick's blanket coverage.
McWilliams took one slashing penalty out of frustration, and more than once disorganization befell the Lakers bench, as they tried to avoid what was turning into a defensive mismatch.
While Brick was off serving a penalty midway through the first period, however, McWilliams assisted on a pair of power-play goals that broke a 1-1 tie. By the end of the first period, Brick found himself banished with a game misconduct after receiving a major penalty. With two goals in the first two minutes of the second period - one of them by McWilliams - the Lakers took the lead from 3-1 to 5-1 and the Kings managed just one more goal the rest of the way.
With none of the Kings able to match Brick's persistent defence, McWilliams scored three times in the final 40 minutes to finish the game with five points.
Adam Churchill also had five points for Peterborough, as he and Chris Clancy scored two goals apiece. John Lynch, Cam Crowe and Luke Grills scored the other Laker goals.
Kaleb Bingley and Hunter Drew replied for Kingston, which is now winless in 18 games all-time against Peterborough. Related Articles:
