Napanee advances to final at Western Canada midget tournament
Posted: August 4th, 2014 @ 3:12am
Napanee Express will play for the gold medal Monday at the Western Canada Midget Fastball Championship tournament in the Battlefords, Sask.
The Express gained that opportunity when they defeated the British Columbia champion, the Fraser Valley Vipers, 11-2 in the opening game of the playoff round Sunday night.
Undefeated in seven games at the tournament, the Express broke open a 2-1 game with four runs in the second inning and turned it into a rout with four more in the third.
It was the fifth time in seven games Napanee has imposed the mercy rule on an opponent. The Express has scored 81 runs in just 34 innings.
Blake Hurley, Marcus Rice, Brandon Tucker and Shane McNish had two hits apiece for Napanee. Rice had four runs batted in, three of them coming from his third-inning home run.
Singles by Nathan Lee and Hurley ignited the second-inning rally. Ty McNish delivered a run with a triple and he scored on a single by Tucker. Keegan Scott then doubled and, with runners on second and third, Alex Douglas flew out to deep left field.
Kyle Ainsley had five strikeouts in picking up the pitching win. He scattered nine singles and both B.C. runs were unearned.
Napanee will play the winner of Sunday morning's game between Fraser Valley and the Calahoo, Alta., Chiefs. The Express unloaded a 15-hit assault in a five-inning 13-0 victory over the No. 1 Alberta team in preliminary play Saturday. Related Articles:
