Napanee whips Saskatchewan team at Canadian junior fastball
Posted: August 14th, 2014 @ 4:21pm
Cole Bolton threw a five-hitter and struck out eight in just five innings Thursday morning as the Napanee Express defeated the Saskatoon Bullets 12-2 at the Canadian junior fastball championship in Irma, Alta.
Bolton didn't walk a batter in winning his second game of the week-long tournament.
Napanee broke open a tie game with five runs in the second inning, and ensured the mercy rule would be invoked with six runs in the fourth. All of the Express's victories have gone less than the regulation seven innings.
Taylor Brown had three hits, including a pair of triples, for Napanee. He also scored three runs. Bolton, Ty Sebastian and Jarrett Williams each had two of Napanee's 14 hits.
Braden Scott's two-run double was the big blow in the second inning for the Express, which started the fourth inning with five consecutive base-hits.
Napanee, 5-2, will conclude the round-robin portion of the nine-team competition with a game against the host Irma Tigers at 5 o'clock EDT. The Tigers, undefeated through the first five games of the tournament, suffered their first defeat Wednesday night when they were whipped 15-0 by the Owen Sound Selects in a game that lasted just three innings.
With the win, the Express, tied for third place at 5-2, assured itself of a top-four finish and a double life in the playoff round. Owen Sound tops the standings at 6-1, having defeated Quebec 11-1 Thursday morning. Irma is 5-1 going into its game with Napanee and the Saskatoon Diamondbacks are 5-2, after beating the Yorkton Blue Jays Thursday morning 14-0.
The only team with a chance to catch Napanee is the Stratford Cubs, currently 3-3, but in that tie-breaker the Express would be favoured by virtue of a 12-3 victory when the teams met Wednesday morning. Related Articles:
