Posted: August 14th, 2014 @ 10:10pm
Napanee Express ended the preliminary round of the Canadian junior fastball championship Thursday night with a 6-2 loss to the Alberta entry, the host team from Irma. The defeat left Napanee with a 5-3 record, good for fourth place in the final standings. The Express lost to all three teams that will finish ahead of it: the Owen Sound Selects, Saskatoon Diamondbacks and Irma.Owen Sound was defeated 7-0 by the Diamondbacks Thursday afternoon, leaving both teams with 6-2 records. Irma is 6-1 going into the final game of the round-robin Thursday night against Newfoundland. How the top three positions shake down depends on the outcome of that game. The hometown Tigers didn't have a big inning but they scored in four of six turns at bat, and they led 5-0 before Napanee got on the scoreboard in the third inning.Carson Soucy scattered four hits for Irma, striking out seven. Two of the hits were solo home runs, by Ty Sebastian and Tyson Zehr. Sebastian was the only Napanee player to have two hits.Soucy had three hits in a 12-hit Irma attack against Napanee lefthander Erick Morgan, who struck out five and walked three. The Tigers scored twice in the first inning, after a lead-off triple by Brett Larson, a double by Ambrose Firkas and a two-out single by Ronald Palmer. Firkas had a two-out single in the second inning as the home team scored twice more.On Thursday morning, Cole Bolton threw a five-hitter and struck out eight in just five innings as Napanee defeated the Saskatoon Bullets 12-2. Bolton didn't walk a batter in winning his second game of the week-long tournament.Napanee broke open a tie game with five runs in the second inning, and ensured the mercy rule would be invoked for the fifth time with six runs in the fourth.Taylor Brown had three hits, including a pair of triples, for Napanee. He also scored three runs. Bolton, Sebastian and Jarrett Williams each had two of Napanee's 14 hits.Braden Scott's two-run double was the big blow in the second inning for the Express, which then started the fourth inning with five consecutive base-hits.Napanee will play its first game of the playoff round Friday against the team that finishes first at the end of preliminary play. The top four teams each will have the so-called double life, meaning it will take two defeats to knock them out of the tournament.Teams that finish fifth through eighth will all be eliminated after just one loss.LinescoresNapanee 000 110 0 - 2 4 0Irma, Alta. 221 001 x - 6 12 1Erick Morgan (L,1-1) and Cody Brooks; Carson Soucy (W,4-0) and Taylor Schubada.
