Late touchdown allows Windsor to subdue Laurier
Posted: September 7th, 2014 @ 7:50am
A touchdown with 30 seconds left in the football game gave the Windsor Lancers a 39-34 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in an Ontario University Athletics match Saturday in Windsor.
The score, on a 58-yard pass from quarterback Austin Kennedy to Evan Pszczonak, completed a dramatic comeback for the Lancers, who fell behind 33-16 early in the fourth quarter when Hawks receiver Greg Nyhof caught a 12-yard TD pass. It was Laurier's second touchdown in a span of 67 seconds and it appeared to break open a three-point game.
Instead, the Lancers scored 23 points after that to even their record at 1-1.
Kennedy finished the game with 22 completions in 38 attempts for 326 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Likewise, Laurier quarterback James Fracas threw for two TDs, on a day when he was 25-for-30 for 292 yards. Neither man threw an interception.
Each team had 451 yards of total offence.
Hawks running back Dillon Campbell continued his mastery of opponents, with 177 yards rushing, giving him 470 yards in just two games this season.
Pszczonak finished the game with six catches for 144 yards.
Elsewhere Saturday, the defending Yates Cup champion Western Mustangs began their title defence with a 61-0 win over the York Lions, the Guelph Gryphons scored 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter of their 50-18 win over the Toronto Blues; the McMaster Marauders improved to 2-0 with a 66-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors and the Ottawa Gee-Gees likewise remained unbeaten by scoring with 16 seconds left in the game for a 37-30 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels.
Western scored 24 points in the second quarter and with a 41-0 halftime lead took the foot off the gas against hapless York, which has now allowed 112 points in two games. Eleven different Mustangs carried the football, and two quarterbacks found nine different receivers as they piled up 650 yards of offence.
Starting quarterback Will Finch was 21-for-25 for 253 yards and three touchdowns. Garret Sanvido rushed for 127 yards on 12 carries and Brian Marshall caught eight passes for 105 yards.
Western's defence was masterful, allowing the Lions just 135 yards of offence, 66 passing and 42 rushing. The Mustangs sacked the quarterback four times, made eight other tackles behind the line of scrimmage and intercepted two passes, which was only eight less than Lions quarterbacks completed to their own teammates.
Matt Uren had two TD receptions for Western, while Kalvin Johnson returned one of the interceptions 37 yards for a touchdown.
In Waterloo, the Marauders held the host team to just 143 yards of offence. Starting quarterback Marshall Ferguson left the game early, after completing seven of 10 passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns. His understudy, Asher Hastings, kept it up, enjoying a 10-for-12 day in his CIS debut, for 211 yards and a touchdown.
McMaster, which totalled 650 yards of offence, used seven different rushers, seven different receivers and got touchdowns from seven different players.
A 62-yard punt return for a touchdown by Ryan Nieuwestee with 12 seconds to go in the third quarter allowed Guelph to overcome an 18-17 Toronto lead and the Gryphons went on to score 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to gain their first win of the year.
James Roberts, playing in relief of Guelph starter Jazz Lindsey, completed 12 of 20 passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns. In the absence of running back Rob Farquharson, Johnny Augustine carried the ball 20 times for 100 yards.
Alex Charette caught eight passes, three of them for touchdowns, for the Gryphons. Simon Nassar was 26-for-41 for the Varsity Blues, for 298 yards, but Toronto could muster just 80 yards along the ground.
Play resumes Saturday when Waterloo, 0-2, meets Laurier, 1-1; Western, 2-0, travels to Kingston to play Queen's, 1-1; Guelph will play the Gee-Gees in Ottawa in a match of undefeated teams; York, 0-2, will go downtown to play Toronto in a clash of winless teams, and Carleton, 1-0, visits McMaster, 2-0.
