Queen's soccer women, men remain unbeaten

Queen's Golden Gaels improved their record to 3-0 Sunday afternoon, as they gained a 2-0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers in an Ontario University Athletics women's soccer game at Tindall Field.
Playing their second game in two days, the Gaels got flawless goalkeeping from Madison Tyrell, who made eight saves, the most noteworthy of which was a sliding save in the 44th minute that preserved Queen's early 1-0 lead.
It was Tyrell's second shutout of the weekend, having blanked the Laurentian Voyageurs in a 3-0 Queen's win Saturday.
Tara Bartram scored the Gaels' first goal Sunday in the game's 20th minute, after Rachel Radu intercepted a clearing attempt in the Nipissing end of the field. Tianna Lombardo extended the lead with a goal five minutes into the second half.
Saturday at Miklas-McCarney Field, neither team scored until the game was 36 minutes old, when Lombardo beat Voyageurs keeper Richele Greenwood on a penalty shot. Not that the Gaels would need any help in the second half-when they outshot the visitors 13-3-but a Laurentian own goal gave Queen's a 2-0 lead before Jackie Tessier scored her fourth goal of the young season, five minutes from the end of the game, to complete the scoring.
The Gaels are idle until Saturday, when they'll travel to Peterborough to play the winless Trent Excalibur.
Royal Military College Paladins, meanwhile, gained their first point of the season Saturday, in a 2-2 draw with Nipissing. A flurry of goals in the middle of the second half provided some drama, as the Lakers tied the game 1-1, RMC regained the lead and the Lakers tied it again in the span of five minutes.
RMC's Emma Perry scored the only goal of the first half and Mireille Musca scored in the game's 67th minute for the Paladins, who emerged from the weekend 0-2-1 after bowing 1-0 to Laurentian Sunday afternoon.
La Salle Secondary School grad Nicolle Gaudet made 14 saves in goal for RMC, which was outshot 16-9.
Michelle Walsh scored the only goal of Sunday's game in the 70th minute. Paladins goalkeeper Alexandria Hogg made 11 saves as the home team was outshot 12-4 in a chippy contest, one in which seven yellow cards were presented, six of them in a 13-minute span in the first half.
RMC resumes play Saturday in Oshawa against Ontario Tech.
In men's play Sunday, Queen's improved to 3-0-1, two points behind division-leading Ryerson, with a 2-0 win over Nipissing.
It took just four minutes for the Gaels to open scoring, as Conor Hannigan headed in a free kick from Oliver Coren in just the fourth minute. Jacob Schroeter scored on a low shot just nine minutes later and, with the Queen's defence allowing the Lakers to take just two shots on goal in the second half, the Gaels completed their third shutout of the season, this one shared by starter Max Materne and Taylor Reynolds.
The men will also travel to Peterborough Saturday to play Trent.
