Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 10th, 2013 @ 11:22am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Sunday, March 10, 1963

Kingston maintains its two-point advantage over Hull-Ottawa in the battle for first place in the Eastern Professional Hockey League with a 6-4 win in Sudbury. Frontenacs goaltender Bruce Gamble is spectacular, making 54 saves.

Wayne Connelly scored his first two goals since returning to the Frontenacs' lineup, and added an assist. Harry Sinden, Ron Willy, Don Blackburn and Wayne Schultz scored once each for Kingston.

Sudbury coach Murph Chamberlain was thrown out of the gae early in the first period when, displeased with a penalty call, he threw his hat and it hit referee Tom Smith.

In Hull, meanwhile, the Canadiens keep pace with a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Braves. Still finding it difficult to adjust to a player shortage, Hull-Ottawa spots the visitors a goal before scoring three straight. Rookie Claude Larose, Doug Senior, with the tying goal in the first minute of the third period, and Bob Courcy scored for the Canadiens.
