Decisive wins define league's great divide

With each passing week, the societal lines are becoming more distinct between the haves and the have-nots in Ontario University Athletics football.
On a day when four of the five games were decided by a margin of 31 points or more, only the Carleton Ravens were able to muster a credible performance in a losing cause, as they succumbed by a mere 20 points to the McMaster Marauders.
Playing in Hamilton, the Ravens allowed the Marauders to score just one touchdown in the first 57 minutes of a game they ultimately lost 37-17. Everywhere else, the games were not close, as the Toronto Blues waxed the hapless York Lions 70-0, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks thumped the winless Waterloo Warriors 44-0, Guelph Gryphons defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 42-7 and the Western Mustangs beat the officially winless Queen's Golden Gaels 43-12.
Carleton made the Marauders sweat for their win, as a 65-yard touchdown pass from Nick Gorgichuk to Dexter Brown with 10 minutes to go in the game lifted the Ravens to within six points at 23-17. Wayne Moore rushed for two touchdowns in the final three minutes to seal the win for McMaster, which improved to 3-0.
Gorgichuk completed 12 of 18 passes for Carleton, for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions. Marshall Ferguson was 23-for-42 for McMaster, with two interceptions.
Daniel Vandervoort caught 10 passes for 144 yards for the Marauders, while Frontenac Secondary School grad Ben O'Connor caught four balls for 39 yards. Moore, who scored all three McMaster touchdowns, had 164 yards rushing from 27 carries.
At Toronto, the Varsity Blues took command with three touchdowns in the last seven minutes of the first quarter and the rout was on when they scored another in the second minute of the second quarter. They kept pouring it on at the end, with two touchdowns in the last six minutes of the game by rookie Divante Smith.
Lukas Gavac carried 18 times for 179 yards for Toronto, which collected 680 yards of total offence. He was one of three backs-Smith and Ashton Rochester were the others-to enjoy a 100-yard day for the Blues, who got seven of their TDs along the ground.
Quarterback Nikko Stamatis completed 11 of 33 passes as York continued to sputter, with just 117 yards of total offence. In three games this year, the Lions have managed to gain just 424 yards offensively, they've yet to score a touchdown and they haven't scored a point of any description since the second quarter of their first game, 153 minutes and 16 seconds ago.
In Waterloo, Ronnie Pfeffer kicked five field goals-of 35, 36, 24, 50 and 42 yards- to tie the Laurier school record for most field goals in a game. His career-best 50-yarder set a school record he shared with John Wintermeyer, who played for Queen's and Laurier 40 years ago.
Laurier scored 17 points in the last five minutes of the first half for a 28-0 lead at the intermission. The Hawks were led by running back Dillon Campbell, who ran roughshod over his third opponent this year, with 204 yards rushing from 27 carries.
It was the second 200-yard game of the year for Campbell, the nation's leading rusher, and it was painful to watch for the Warriors, who managed just 43 yards along the ground as a team.
Just a week after a 631-yard, 37-point performance at Queen's, the Gee-Gees came home to discover they'd left their offence at the side of the highway somewhere between Kingston and Ottawa. The home team managed just 228 total yards, and quarterback Derek Wendel had a miserable afternoon, completing just 11 of 32 passes for 103 yards and three interceptions.
At 10-for-27, Guelph quarterback Jazz Lindsey wasn't much better, but he didn't throw any picks and he found three receivers for touchdowns, including Frontenac Secondary School grad Rob Carnegie, for a two-yard TD early in the fourth quarter.
Guelph had less than 400 yards of offence and though the Gryphons enjoyed tremendous field position throughout, they had difficulty finishing. The Gryphons kicked five field goals, four of them from inside the 20-yard line.
Rob Farquharson carried the football 22 times for Guelph, for 129 yards. Sydenham High School grad Ben Fisher caught three passes for Ottawa, for 46 yards.
This week, Windsor, 2-0, will visit Waterloo, where the Warriors are 0-3; Queen's, 0-3, will be the Homecoming opponent at Guelph, 2-1; York's Homecoming will feature McMaster, 3-0; Carleton, 1-1, will host Ottawa, 2-1, in the Panda Game, and the Varsity Blues, 1-2, will see how close to 70 points they can come when they provide the Homecoming opposition for unbeaten Western, 2-0.
