Queen's soccer men remain undefeated; women's team suddenly struggles

Finding themselves suddenly bereft of their ability to score goals, the Queen's Golden Gaels emerged from the weekend with just a tie to show for a pair of Ontario University Athletics women's soccer games.
Playing Sunday on Miklas-McCarney Field, the Gaels were blanked for the second game in a row, 1-0 by the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. That followed a frustrating afternoon in Peterborough Saturday, from where Queen's, the second-highest scoring team in the East division going into the weekend, left with just a share of a scoreless draw with the winless Trent Excalibur.
The outcomes leave the No. 10-ranked Gaels 3-1-1, tied for fourth place in the East division with Toronto, five points behind division-leading Ottawa and three points behind unbeaten Ontario Tech.
Neither team enjoyed a lot of scoring opportunities Sunday. Tech goalkeeper Melissa Linton denied Rachel Radu of Queen's with a diving save in the first half and Gaels Tara Bartram sent a ball over the cross-bar of the Tech goal early in the second, but it wasn't until the game's 66th minute that the game's only goal was scored, when Shannon Lucas beat Gaels goalie Madison Tyrell.
It was the first goal allowed by Tyrell in five games this season.
On Saturday, the Gaels outshot winless Trent 15-4 but they couldn't solve Excalibur keeper Katherine Suitor, who backstopped her team to its first point in four games.
The Gaels will play Saturday in Toronto, where they will play the winless Ryerson Rams, 0-5-0.

Queen's men, meanwhile, remained undefeated Sunday afternoon as they blanked Ontario Tech 1-0. Rohan Sarna, making his first start of the season, needed just two minutes to score what would be the game's only goal on a cross from Tommy Hong.
Gaels goalkeeper Taylor Reynolds faced just three shots but he stopped them all in posting his second shutout of the weekend.
With the win, the Gaels, who beat Trent 1-0 Saturday, improved to 5-0-1.
Playing in Peterborough, Queen's got another early goal, this one in the game's 10th minute by Chris Michael, and again the Gaels defence made it stand up for the victory, as Queen's allowed Trent to get just five shots on goal.
The Gaels will be challenged to continue their unbeaten streak Saturday, when they travel to Toronto to face undefeated Ryerson, 5-0-0.
