Panda hangover afflicts Carleton as Ravens bow 53-3 to Laurier

Posted: September 28th, 2014 @ 1:19am

Apparently the hangover of winning the Panda Game in dramatic fashion a week ago still lingered with the Carleton Ravens Saturday, as they were whipped 53-3 by the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in an Ontario University Athletics football game in Waterloo.

A week after a last-play touchdown gave Carleton a win over cross-town rival Ottawa, the Ravens managed just 97 yards rushing as they fell to 2-2. Trailing 31-0 at halftime, Carleton didn't score until Michael Domagala kicked a 39-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game.

Dillon Campbell rushed for 176 yards and scored three touchdowns for Laurier, 3-1. It was actually the worst game of the year for Campbell, who leads the country with 850 yards rushing in four games.

In the first meeting of the teams since 1970, Anthony Pizzuti caught two touchdown passes from Hawks quarterback James Fracas, who was 14-for-19 for 196 yards, three TDs and no interceptions.

In other games Saturday, the McMaster Marauders improved to 5-0 with a 28-19 win over the visiting Queen's Golden Gaels; the Western Mustangs spanked the Waterloo Warriors 69-3, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Toronto Blues 41-25.

Friday night in Toronto, quarterback Austin Kennedy threw for an OUA season-best 406 yards as the Windsor Lancers defeated the York Yeomen 35-3.

Western piled up 753 yards of offence, 401 of it along the ground, as the Mustangs improved to 4-0. Yannick Harou rushed for 104 yards and freshman Alex Taylor, playing his first intercollegiate game, rushed for 102. Quarterback Will Finch completed 10 of 17 passes for 207 yards before giving way to Stevenson Bone, who finished up 6-for-8 for 145 yards.

Again the Mustangs spread it around, as nine different players carried the football, and 10 different players caught at least one pass.

The Western defence intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble, while holding Waterloo to just 183 yards of offence, only 46 of them along the ground. Mike Dedys had seven catches for a season-best 88 yards for the Warriors.

After falling behind 24-0 at Toronto, the Varsity Blues staged a comeback late in the first half but a touchdown by Ottawa's Mitchell Baines, on a seven-yard pass from Derek Wendel with 28 seconds remaining in the second quarter, sent the Gee-Gees into halftime with a 31-13 lead.

Wendel was 26-for-32 for 334 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Bryce Vieira had 105 yards rushing for the Gee-Gees, while Sydenham High School grad Ben Fisher had the best game of his career, 138 yards from five catches, including one for a 24-yard touchdown.

Lewis Ward, the Bayridge Secondary School grad, kicked field goals of 21 and 31 yards for Ottawa. Lukas Gavac rushed for 165 yards for Toronto.

Friday night at Toronto, Kennedy's passing performance allowed the Lancers to improve to 4-0 despite gaining just 67 yards along the ground.

Evan Pszczonak caught eight passes for 152 yards, his third 100-plus yard receiving game this year. His 60-yard touchdown reception with just 80 seconds left in the first half broke open a 10-0 game, as Windsor was able to score just two field goals in the game's first 28 minutes against a team that had allowed 231 points in its first four games.

Pszczonak, who did not play against Waterloo, has had three of the top six receiving games in the OUA this year.

York, 0-5, has yet to score its first touchdown of the year.

Two marquee games highlight the Week 6 schedule, as McMaster, 5-0, plays at Western, 4-0, in a game of undefeated teams, and Windsor, 4-0, hosts Guelph, 3-1, in a clash that could ultimately decide third place. Also Saturday, winless York will play at Laurier and there will be two games in Ottawa, as the Gee-Gees, 3-2, entertain Waterloo, 0-5, and Carleton, 2-2, hosts Toronto, 1-4. Queen's has the weekend off.
