In a week of turmoil, football rankings remain unchanged
Posted: September 30th, 2014 @ 11:04pm
Amid a week of turmoil off the field, nothing has changed with the Canadian Interuniversity Sport ranking of the country's intercollegiate football teams.
In the poll of Football Reporters of Canada, Laval once again appeared at the top of all 30 ballots after they defeated McGill 70-3.
It was Laval's CIS record-setting 22nd consecutive victory, in a streak that dates to 2012. It came at the expense of a McGill team that was playing its last game with coach Clint Uttley, who resigned Tuesday.
Uttley's resignation came in the wake of the university's suspension Friday of player Luis-Andres Guimont-Mota, after the 22-year-old business student was charged with assault and uttering threats arising from an incident involving his wife.
In 2010, Guimont-Mota was convicted of assault in Quebec City.
In suspending Guimont-Mota, the university said in a release: "This individual should not have been invited to join our team. That was not in accordance with the values of our institution."
Uttley's resignation stemmed from that part of the statement.
"The above statement does not represent my personal morals or values with regards to sport, recruiting, and life in general," he wrote. "I believe in rehabilitation. The student athlete accepted his conviction and did his punishment, a fact that was not hidden from the university.
"At the time of his arrival, the university tolerated and accepted his presence and then proceeded to celebrate his accomplishments thereafter."
Guimont-Mota won the Dan Pronyk award last year as the team's outstanding offensive player. A running back, he was leading the team in rushing with 142 yards in his three games with the Redmen this year.
Laval hasn't lost since bowing 23-20 at Montreal Oct. 13, 2012. The win was the 47th in a row at home for the rouge et or, also a Canadian intercollegiate record.
After Laval, Calgary remains second despite some off-field problems of its own. On Friday, the Dinos forfeited a game after it was discovered that two players who participated in their 71-3 victory over Alberta on Sept. 5 were not academically eligible to do so.
The game now goes into the books as a 1-0 Alberta win.
In a release, the university said the infraction was the result of an administrative error within the athletics department.
"The error stemmed from anomalies in the recognition of course credits from 2013-14 where the courses were passed but ultimately not able to contribute to the 18 credit-hour requirement to maintain eligibility," the release read. "This was not caught when the athletic department performed its eligibility checks for the football team."
It's the second time this season that a team has lost a victory due to use of an ineligible player, also involving a player who previously was cleared to play, also stemming from a game in the first week of the season. Queen's lost its season-opening win at Windsor under the same circumstances.
Things did not go swimmingly on the field for the Dinos, either, as they managed just a 42-41 win over Manitoba. Calgary watched a 31-14 second-quarter lead evaporate and needed a last-minute field goal to eke out the victory.
This weekend, two teams are guaranteed to fall from the ranks of the undefeated, as No. 4 McMaster, the nation's only 5-0 team, visits London, where the No. 3-ranked Western Mustangs will put their 4-0 record on the line, while on Sunday Laval will host Concordia, also 4-0 and ranked No. 9 in the land.
