Laurier out, Windsor in latest Top 10 football poll
Posted: October 14th, 2014 @ 9:17pm
After a week when four of the nation's top 10 football teams didn't play, it shouldn't be surprising that not a lot has changed in this week's ranking of the country's top university football teams.
As they have each week this year, panelists from the Football Reporters of Canada have Laval at the top of the list, followed by Calgary and McMaster. All three teams had the week off.
The Western Mustangs, perhaps still smarting from their first loss of the season a week ago against McMaster, put a 61-20 licking on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, thereby bumping the Hawks from the Top 10 after just one week.
Montreal solidified its spot behind Western at No. 5, thumping No. 9 Concordia 36-3. Despite the defeat, the Stingers held fast in the ninth position.
Members of the ranking committee grudgingly seem ready to recognize Mount Allison, which at 6-0 is off to the best start in school history. The first-place team in the Atlantic conference-and one of only three undefeated teams remaining in the land-the Mounties whipped Saint Mary's 33-1 on Saturday and was rewarded by moving up one spot, from No. 8 to No. 7, ahead of idle Saskatchewan.
The Windsor Lancers, the team with the best record in the country that wasn't ranked in recent weeks, finally made the fraternity at No. 10, after a 39-29 win over the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees Friday.
This week's ranking, with record, previous rank, my rank, last week's result and next opponent:
Laval, 5-0 (1) (1), was idle; next: Sunday, vs. Bishop's.
Calgary, 4-1 (2) (2), was idle; next: Saturday, at Alberta.
McMaster, 6-0 (3) (3), was idle; next: Saturday, vs. Wilfrid Laurier.
Western, 5-1 (4) (6), beat Laurier 61-20; next: Saturday, at No. 6 Guelph.
Montreal, 5-1 (5) (5), beat No. 9 Concordia 36-3; next: Saturday, Oct. 25, at Bishop's.
Guelph, 5-1 (6) (7), beat Carleton 44-24; next: Saturday, vs. No. 4 Western.
Mount Allison, 6-0 (8) (4), beat Saint Mary's 33-1; next: Saturday, at Acadia.
Saskatchewan, 4-1 (7) (8), was idle; next: Friday, at Manitoba.
Concordia, 4-2 (9) (10), lost 36-3 to No. 5 Montreal; next: Saturday, Oct. 25, at Sherbrooke.
Windsor, 5-1 (NR) (9), beat Ottawa 39-29; next: Saturday, at Carleton.
