Combined KC-QE football team folds
Posted: October 16th, 2014 @ 10:12pm
For the first month of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association season, it looked like the noble experiment was working fine.
This week it fell apart.
The combined senior football team from Kingston and Queen Elizabeth collegiates has folded, amid a sudden drop in attendance at practice.
As few as seven players came to practice this week and coach Brandon Watt advised KASSAA convenor Frank Halligan Wednesday that he'd have to forfeit Friday's game with Sydenham, scheduled to be played at QE. By Thursday night, it became apparent that the team wouldn't be able to continue at all, and games next week against Frontenac and La Salle will also be forfeited.
The Blue Raiders, as the team was sometimes known, began the season with a roster of 32 players, 25 from KC and seven from QE. KC didn't have a senior team last year and QE hadn't had a football team of any description in six years.
Since neither school had enough players for a team of its own, but KASSAA wished to provide an opportunity for those students to play, it gave special dispensation for the schools to combine. The team wore the KC uniform, practised at Winston Churchill Public School and was coached by Watt, a former Queen's Golden Gaels lineman who teaches at QE.
The team was 1-2, having won its first game over Napanee before losing decisively to Regi. Last week, it lost its game at Bayridge in the last minute, 9-8.
There was precedent for blending students from two schools into one team. KC and QE similarly pooled players for a senior football team in the early 1980s, and last spring they combined to form a rugby team.
The Limestone District School Board has decided to amalgamate the two schools under one roof, and has money pledged by the province to build the new school, once it finds a place to put it. Related Articles:
