Kings put finishing touches to coaching staff
Posted: March 11th, 2013 @ 6:57pm
Kingston Kings coach Mike Dube has added two assistants to work with him during the 2013 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season. Tim Sawa and Andrew MacKay will join Dube and the lone holdover from last year's coaching staff, Connor Dorey, on the Kings bench this summer.
Sawa, 28, from Toronto, played his minor lacrosse in the Mimico organization and played junior with the Mountaineers and Mississauga. As a field player, he played in Brampton and Orangeville, where he won the First Nations Cup under-19 championship in 2003. Former vice-president of the Mimico minor association, Tim runs a grassroots lacrosse camp in Aurora through the iLax organization.
A Division I NCAA player at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., Tim later won Canadian university field lacrosse championships in 2006 and 2009 at Brock, where he studied recreation and leisure. He was later a first-team all-Canadian at University of Toronto, where he studied genetics. He's now a teacher and research assistant at Queen's.
"I chose Tim because of his background of success and winning," Dube said. "Tim is a strong lacrosse mind and a guy I have grown to respect through competing against him for many years. I respect Tim's knowledge of the game and the mental edge that he brings to our staff."
MacKay, 23, from Williamstown, Ont., played his minor lacrosse in Cornwall. He played for the junior B team there and junior A with the Ottawa Titans and in Montreal. Andrew has played in two Founders Cup national junior B tournaments, in 2008 with the Montreal Shamrocks and in 2010 with Team Quebec, a team coached by Dube.
Andrew played at Onandaga Community College in Syracuse and later he and Dube were teammates at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Que., where MacKay was co-captain and the team won a national championship in 2011. He graduated with a business degree, majoring in human resource management and entrepreneurship.
An assistant coach with the East division champion Cornwall Celtics the last two summers, Andrew now works at the downtown Kingston office of Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
"I have admired Andrew's work ethic and determination, both on and off the floor, since we have known each other," Dube said. "Andrew's knowledge of the league is second to none and he will be an integral part of our coaching staff. His commitment to detail will make him a key substitutions coach and he will be invaluable to our organization."
Dorey was a charter member of the revived Kingston junior C team with the Cavaliers in 2009. His goaltending was an integral part of the Kings reaching the East division final in 2011, just one year after the Cavaliers won only one game in 2010. A student at the University of Guelph, he began his coaching career with the Kings last year.
* The Kings will begin preparing for the coming season Wednesday, with their first conditioning session, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Lawrence College. It's the first of three optional sessions that will be offered on successive Wednesdays before tryouts begin in April. The workouts are open to all midget- and junior-age players, though players carded in 2012 with other organizations must obtain a letter or email of permission to run from their parent organization. The signature of a parent or guardian is required for players under the age of 18 to participate. Cost to attend is $10 per session.
