Three of six OFSAA cross-country races won by Kingston runners

Kingston-area athletes won three of the six races Saturday at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations cross-country championships, contested on the campus of the University of Waterloo.
In an unprecedented local performance, another local runner won a bronze medal, Kingston Collegiate was second in the senior boys team standings and Frontenac was fifth among midget boys teams.
Cameron Linscott of KC and Branna MacDougall of Regiopolis Notre Dame, both Grade 11 students, won their respective senior races, while Brogan MacDougall, Branna's sister, won the midget girls race.
They were the first individual OFSAA cross-country championships titles for Regi, and just the second for KC.
Ben Workman of KC, 42nd at last year's OFSAA race, won the bronze medal in senior boys division.
Linscott, who was fifth at OFSAA last year as a junior, won his 6.957-kilometre race in 22 minutes 31.8 seconds, with an 11-second margin of victory over Miles Matthews of Belle River. Workman finished less than two seconds after that, in 22:44.6, with an 11-second cushion over the fourth-place runner.
The two led KC to the senior team silver medals, missing the top spot by just five points (147-152) to Valour School of Petawawa, which had four runners finish between 14th and 68th place.
KC's other scoring runners were Riley Lacasandile, who finished 49th, and Ben Pulver, who was 99th.
Regi's Paul Sagriff was 84th in the 270-competitor field.
Linscott's gold medal was just the second by a KC runner since OFSAA began holding cross-country championships in 1957. Braden Novakowski won the provincial junior title in 2002.
Only two other Kingston-area male runners have won OFSAA championships. Dylan Wykes and Kieran L'Abbe, both of Frontenac, each won a midget crown, in 1997 and 2011, respectively.
Branna MacDougall won her 5.029-kilometre race in 18 minutes 10.3 seconds, getting the best of Hannah Woodhouse of Georgian Bay by a little more than five seconds. MacDougall was 13th last year as a junior.
Regi was 14th among 39 senior girls teams.
In the closest contest of the day, Brogan MacDougall nipped Jocelyn Chau of de la Salle in a finish so tight both racers were given the same time, 11 minutes 12.6 seconds, at the end of 3.1 kilometres. MacDougall's Regi teammate, Bridget Willemse, was 77th in the 259-girl field.
The MacDougalls are just the second and third girls from Kingston to win an OFSAA cross-country title in the 42 years the provincial body has held competitions for female athletes. Frontenac's Emily Tallen won the midget championship in 1994 and the senior crown in 1997.
Other local highlights from Saturday's racing:
KC's Jackie Quesnel was 10th of 259 competitors in a 4.031-kilometre junior girls race that was won in 14 minutes 35.5 seconds by Shona McCullough of Ottawa's Longfields-Davidson Heights. Quesnel was 25th a year ago as a midget. The eastern Ontario champion was about a minute off the winning pace, in 15:42.8, as she led her team to 21st place among 37 teams.
Alex Drover of KC was 17th in the 267-runner field in junior boys division, completing the 6.0-kilometre course in 21 minutes 25.9 seconds, as KC finished 13th of 39 teams. After getting spiked at the start line, Regi's Paul Bates was 35th and Isaac Sanderson of Sydenham was 44th.
Frontenac finished fifth among 36 midget boys teams, led by Konnor Weston, the EOSSAA champion, who was the 60th competitor to finish the 5.029-kilometre course, in 19 minutes 16 seconds, and Brennan Laidman, who was two-tenths of a second behind in 61st place. Teammate Jack Rowlatt was 77th.
