Mitch O'Connor OUA special teams football player of the week

Posted: November 11th, 2014 @ 3:57pm

Rookie Mitch O'Connor of the McMaster Marauders is the Ontario University Athletics special teams football player of the week.

O'Connor, the former Frontenac Secondary School star, blocked a punt at a critical point in the Marauders' 42-31 semifinal victory Saturday over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Thirty seconds remained to be played in the third quarter and the Marauders were trailing 28-26 when O'Connor, despite being held-an opponent was flagged on the play-blocked a punt by Ottawa's Domenic Bellardini near midfield.

The Marauders got the ball at the Ottawa 38-yard line and though they didn't score on the subsequent possession, it was a dramatic reversal of field position that ultimately helped McMaster score 16 fourth-quarter points.

O'Connor, his brother, Ben, and fellow Frontenac alumnus Marshall Ferguson will be playing for the 107th Yates Cup this weekend when the Marauders host the Guelph Gryphons in the conference final at Ron Joyce Field. Across the field in the visitors' lineup will be former Frontenac teammate Rob Carnegie, a backup running back, and linebacker Jacob Harpell, a Holy Cross Crusaders product.
