Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Wednesday, March 13, 1963
Kingston scores four goals in the third period to defeat the Port Huron Flags 6-2 in an interlocking game at the Community Centre. Cliff Pennington, in what was the 20th straight game in which he earned a point, had two goals and two assists for the Frontenacs.
The Flags, of the International Hockey League, opened scoring but Wayne Connelly tied the game when he stole the puck at the Kingston blue line and raced the length of the ice to beat Flags goaltender Norm Jacques. Richard Cherry scored the winner in the third period, taking what the Kingsotn Whig-Standard described as a perfect pass from Pennington at the Port Huron blue line, cutting in from left wing and deking Jacques to the ice before flipping the puck into the open net.
Whitey Stapleton, from the blue line, Cherry again, on a breakaway, and Pennington scored the other third-period goals. Stapleton added two assists.
Meanwhile, at the Hull Arena, what the Ottawa Citizen described as the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens' "indifferent attitude" in the last few games took a turn for the better with the return of outspoken general manager Sam Pollock behind he bench. With Pollock calling the shots, the Canadiens defeated the new-look Sudbury Wolves 5-2 before a paltry gathering of 923 fans.
Hull-Ottawa remains two points behind Kingston, though the Canadiens hold two games in hand, one of which they will make up Friday night against Port Huron.
With the University Cup Canadian intercollegiate hockey championship coming to Kingston, the Frontenacs will embark on a 10-day road trip that will have them play three times in St. Louis and once in St. Paul, Minn.
